Volleyball falls in regular-season finale

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Grace's volleyball team closed out the regular season on the road with a 3-1 loss against Marian on Saturday.

The loss means Grace will finish either fifth or sixth in the Crossroads League, resulting in a possible return trip to Marian for the quarterfinals of the CL Tournament.

The offense for the Knights (20-11, 9-8 CL) proved too lethal for Grace. Marian smashed 57 kills on a .240 percentage to win in four sets.

The Lady Lancers (14-18, 8-10 CL) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the opener behind a kill and service ace from Kelsee Zuidema. Marian battled back, however, to take an 18-12 lead.

Grace rallied with three straight points, but Marian ended the set 25-16 by scoring seven of the final eight points.

In the second set, Grace rallied to tie the match. Marian held a late lead at 19-17, but the Lady Lancers refused to back down and leveled the score at 22-22.

Grace went on to finish off the game at 25-22 thanks to kills from Sierra Smith and Tori Bontrager.

The third set was Grace's most dynamic on offense; the Lady Lancers had 11 kills on a .286 percentage. But Marian was even better with 17 kills at a .293 clip. Grace had a few key errors late in the set, allowing the Knights to ease out to a 25-20 victory.

Marian looked to close out the match by taking a 19-11 lead in the fourth set. But Grace made a massive comeback, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to tie the score at 23-23. Marta Bleed tallied four kills during Grace's run, and Kari Feddema added three more.

Grace's momentum ran out at the end, however. The Lady Lancers committed two errors on the final two rallies, allowing the Knights to take the decisive fourth set 25-23 to finish the match.

Bleed paced the Grace attack with 11 kills at a .240 percentage. Feddema also had a well-rounded day with 7 kills, 1 solo and 6 block assists.

Bontrager was efficient on offense, pounding out six kills in 12 tries, and Kaitlin Kerrigan finished with 6 kills, 15 digs and 3 block assists.

Taylor Baird had a match-high 36 assists to go along with 13 digs, and Caylie Teel added 14 digs.

The Lady Lancers await seeding for the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament, set to begin Nov. 5.
