UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's fall season came to a close on Tuesday with a 5-4 loss to Taylor in the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals.
The Lancers (4-6) battled close and nearly overcame a doubles' deficit before bowing out of the tournament.
In doubles' competition, the Trojans (6-6) jumped out to a 2-1 edge. Uros Pajic and Gabe Vervynckt earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles for Grace's lone point.
Pajic and Vervynckt also won in singles' play, including Vervynckt's 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Danila Kurkulin's strong season wrapped up with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 win at the top singles' position, but that proved to be the final win for Grace.
Head coach Larry Schuh commented: "We had a disappointing doubles performance. One doubles had a great opportunity up 5-2 and serving but could not hold the lead. That was a tough one for Danila and Caleb. They have been playing so strong throughout the year and just struggled today. Singles was close as well. Gabe came back and won a three-setter which is exceptionally impressive due to the fact that he lost about a week ago to the same opponent 6-0, 6-1. Once Danila and Uros won, we were up 4-3 in the match and needed only one point from the final three singles. But Taylor ended up being too much for us to handle at those slots.
Next year, I am looking forward to several players maturing competitively. It was a growing year for several, and if they take the next step and take their competition to the next level, we will be much better next year."
