GOSHEN, Ind. - Playing without a number of key players, Grace's volleyball team could not keep pace with Goshen on Wednesday in a 3-0 defeat.
The Lady Lancers (11-10, 5-6 Crossroads League) racked up 41 kills in the match. But Grace's defense could not mute the Maple Leafs (10-9, 5-6 CL), allowing Goshen to hit at a .262 percentage as a team.
Grace's first set was its most dangerous offensively. The Lady Lancers racked up 20 kills on a .228 percentage. Goshen still led 21-15 late in the set, but Grace ripped off six straight kills — including two apiece from Kari Feddema and Taylor Baird — to tie the score.Â
Goshen managed to grab momentum back, ending the set in extra points at 26-24.
In the second set, Grace's offense dried up. The Lady Lancers nearly had as many attack errors (7) as kills (8) in a 12-point loss.
In the third set, Grace seemed poised to extend the match. Grace led late 19-16 after a kill by Feddema. But the Lady Lancers could not find their attack in the final stages. Goshen beat out Grace 9-3 down the stretch to snatch a 25-22 win and finish off the sweep.
Feddema was the most consistent offensive presence for Grace, producing 10 kills on an impressive .500 percentage. Kaitlin Kerrigan also had a good showing with six kills and 11 digs.
Baird tallied 32 assists, 8 digs and 5 kills, and Savannah Hart tacked on seven kills. Marta Bleed ended the match with six kills, Caylie Teel had a team-high 19 digs, and Alexa Hill chipped in with 12 digs.
The Lady Lancers return to action next week at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
