Lancers hold Pilots to one run in Florida

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Grace's baseball team started its Spring Break trip with a 3-1 win over Bethel on Saturday.

The Lancers (4-3) were outhit 9-6 in the game, but two runs in the seventh inning gave Grace the win in the nine-inning nonconference contest.

Grace got on the board first. In the second inning, Xavier Harris reached base with one out. Freshman Cameron Maxwell proceeded to drive him in with a single.

Blake Converset pitched his way around Bethel's lineup, blanking the Pilots for the first five innings. Bethel finally leveled the score in the bottom of the sixth, using two hits, a walk and a fielding error by Grace to make the score 1-1.

Grace did not waste much time pulling back ahead. Shay Hepler singled in Matthew Warren for the go-ahead run. Hepler eventually came around to score off a single by Mitchell Enyart.

In the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, Bethel put runners in scoring position. But each time, the Lancers' defense and relief pitcher Logan Grigsby got out of the jam. Grigsby struck out the final two batters to end the threat in the seventh and got the last two batters in the bottom of the ninth to pop out and ground out.

Enyart batted 2-for-3 for Grace with a triple and an RBI. Scottie Clark was 1-for-1 after coming in as a pinch hitter, and Hepler was 1-of-4 with a run and RBI.

Converset earned the win from the mound, striking out five in six innings. Grigsby was credited with the save, tossing three scoreless innings with four hits and five strikeouts.

The Lancers continue action on Monday with a game against NAIA No. 2 St. Thomas.
