Softball sweeps rival Pilots

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's softball team proved to be too potent offensively for Bethel in a sweep on Tuesday.

The Lady Lancers (12-10, 4-2 Crossroads League) outscored Bethel 15-1 in the doubleheader, earning their fourth straight win in the process.

Grace flexed its offensive muscles in the opener. Grace blasted three home runs — including two solo shots from Ashley Kleinbub — and won 8-0 in a run-rule game.

The Lady Lancers had two homers in the first inning alone. Clarissa Knight belted a two-run home run on the third at-bat of the day, and Kleinbub followed up with her first homer two batters later.

In the second inning, Kyleigh Garner raced home from second base on a single from Hannah Herbster to give Grace a 4-0 lead. Chandler Elliott plated in the third inning to make the score 5-0.

Kati Gregory scored for Grace in the fourth thanks to Morgan Hutcheson's two-out RBI single.

The Lady Lancers ended the game early with two more runs in the fifth. Kleinbub had her second homer of the day on a 3-2 count, and Sam Heim plated Grace's eighth run on a ground ball by Garner.

Herbster and Hutcheson each batted 2-for-3, and Kleinbub was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

Chandler Elliott tossed the complete game from the mound, surrendering just one hit and three walks. She struck out seven batters in five innings.

In the second game, Grace scored seven unanswered runs to win 7-1. Grace was held scoreless for the first three innings, allowing the Pilots (1-13, 1-5 CL) to go ahead 1-0.

But the top of the fourth inning changed the entirety of the game. The Lady Lancers exploded for six runs, benefiting from several Bethel errors. Garner, Brittany Turner, Herbster, Hutcheson, Knight and Kleinbub all came around to score in the inning before the Pilots finally ended the rally.

Knight plated again in the fifth inning when the Pilots dropped a fly ball with two outs.

Bethel, who was outhit 14-6 in the game, was unable to generate a rally against Grace's pitching. Allison Franklin threw the first three innings, allowing one run on four hits. Hannah England finished the game and struck out four batters with two hits allowed in four innings to get the win.

Knight was a sizzling 4-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base, and Heim was 3-for-4 with a double. Hutcheson and Elliott each recorded two hits, and Hutcheson drove in a pair.

The Lady Lancers will travel to No. 12 Davenport on Thursday and Spring Arbor on Friday to wrap up the week.
