Game Recap: Baseball |

Lancers’ home opener produces split

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team split on Saturday with Goshen during the Lancers' home opener at Miller Athletic Complex.

The Lancers (14-10, 2-2 Crossroads League) lost the opener 2-0 before winning the second game 5-2.

Grace has already equaled its win total from last season thanks to a fast start in 2016 under head coach Bill Barr.

In the opener, Goshen threatened to score in the top of the third. The Maple Leafs (10-19, 2-2 CL) loaded the bases with nobody out, but freshman Xavier Harris pitched himself out of the jam. The first out was a popup in the infield, and the next batter grounded into a double play to keep the score 0-0.

The Lancers countered by putting runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the third, but Goshen escaped unscathed thanks to a strikeout and ground out.

Goshen broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning, using a double and a single to plate a run.

Grace spoiled another chance to score in the fourth inning. The Lancers loaded the bases with one out, but Goshen got the next batter to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Maple Leafs tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Goshen singled on back-to-back at-bats, and a runner scampered home from third on a wild pitch.

The Lancers had baserunners in each of the last three innings, including a double in the fifth and sixth innings, but Grace was unable to transform those into runs and lost 2-0.

Frank Rocchio and Cameron Maxwell were both 2-for-3, and Jamar Bray doubled.

Harris started on the mound, surrendering one run on six hits in four innings. Jason Stevens came in to pitch the final three innings, yielding one run on four hits.

In the second game, Grace's offense came to life. Goshen scored in the top of the first, but Grace equalized. Maxwell was hit by a pitch on the first at-bat. He moved to third base after a walk and a ground ball, and he scampered home after a passed ball darted to the backstop.

The second inning produced four more runs for the Lancers. With the bases loaded, Maxwell drove in two runs with a single to the outfield. With two outs, Rocchio drove in two more with a double to the outfield fence.

Grace's three hits in the second inning were all of the Lancers' hits for the entire game.

The Maple Leafs had baserunners in every inning but two. Goshen added a single run in the fifth inning, but the Maple Leafs could not penetrate Grace's cushion any further.

Goshen had runners on first and third base with one out in the sixth, but Wes Gensch struck out the final two batters to keep the score 5-2.

CJ Swartz came in to pitch the final scoreless inning and earned the save.

For the game, Grace was outhit 7-3. Maxwell finished 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBIs, Chase Baker was 1-for-3 with a run, and Rocchio hit 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Logan Grigsby tossed the first 4.1 innings to get the win. He allowed two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Gensch had four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Lancers will enjoy a trio of home dates next week. Grace hosts Lourdes on Tuesday and Mt. Vernon Nazarene on both Friday and Saturday.
