MARION, Ind. – Grace softball took to the road once again on Saturday and split a doubleheader versus an Indiana Wesleyan team that was receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll.
The Lady Lancers (26-20, 17-11 Crossroads League) dropped game one by the slimmest of margins, 6-5, before capturing game two from the Wildcats (35-13, 23-9 Crossroads League) by a 3-2 margin.
In game one, the Lady Lancers were paced by a multi-hit effort courtesy of Abby Mozingo, as well as a two RBI effort from Sam Heim.
The Wildcats jumped out to a two run lead courtesy of a two run HR. Grace would respond with two fourth inning runs, and then added three more in the fifth. Grace would hold a lead going to the bottom of the seventh, but IWU scored three decisive runs to take the first game.
Game two saw Clarissa Knight record two hits for Grace with Chandler Elliott and Ashley Kleinbub notching an RBI a piece.
Grace also rode strong pitching performances by Amanda Bowman and Hannah England, who combined to slam the door on IWU's bid to sweep the doubleheader.
The Lady Lancers got on the board right away on an Elliott RBI groundout in the first, and they added another first inning run on an IWU fielding error. Grace would add on another run in the second and would hold on late for the victory.
The split moves Grace into a fourth place tie in the Crossroads League standings with Spring Arbor.
The Lady Lancers will return home to the Miller Athletic Complex on Tuesday to face the nationally ranked Knights of Marian University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
