WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's softball team could not keep pace with No. 17 Marian on Tuesday.
The Knights (37-7, 29-3 Crossroads League) swept the season series over the Lady Lancers (26-22, 17-13 CL), winning 10-2 and 5-1 at Miller Athletic Complex.
In the opening game, Marian made a statement in the first inning. The Knights plated four runs before Grace was able to record an out, eventually plating six runs in the frame.
The Lady Lancers got one run back in the bottom of the second, thanks to back-to-back doubles from Ashley Kleinbub and Kyleigh Garner. But Marian responded with four more runs in the third to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
Grace's offense started to find its stride in the fourth and fifth innings with multiple baserunners in each inning. In the fourth inning, two singles had runners on the corners, but Grace's potential rally was snuffed out with a diving catch in the outfield for the third out.
In the fifth, Abby Mozingo led off with an infield single. She stole second and scampered to third on a throwing error. Sam Heim then drove in Mozingo with a ground ball. Heim eventually reached third base but was left stranded as the game ended 10-2 due to the run-rule.
Mozingo finished 1-for-1 with a run and a stolen base, and Kyleigh Garner was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Marian outhit Grace 10-7.
In the second game, Marian jumped out to another early lead. The Knights led 3-0, but Grace struck back with a run in the bottom of the third. Hannah Herbster singled and stole second base. A single by Clarissa Knight then brought in Herbster.
Knight nearly scored in the bottom of the first, lacing a two-out triple to the fence. But the threat was ended with a strikeout on the next at-bat.
The sixth inning saw Marian increase its margin to 4-1 thanks to a two-out RBI single. Another two-out rally for the Knights in the seventh tacked on another run, giving Marian a four-run cushion.
Grace was unable to generate a baserunner in its final at-bats in the seventh, and Marian finished off the season sweep.
Knight was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Herbster hit 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
The Lady Lancers end the regular season this week. Grace travels to Taylor on Wednesday, Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Friday, and returns home for Senior Day on Saturday against Taylor at 1 p.m.
