UPLAND, Ind. - The typically high-powered offense of Grace's softball team was held in check on Wednesday at Taylor.
The Lady Lancers (26-24, 17-15 Crossroads League) mustered just five hits in each game of a doubleheader, falling 15-3 and 5-2 on the road.
Grace led in the opening game before a monumental collapse in the third inning. The Lady Lancers led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third.Â
Morgan Hutcheson hit a two-out RBI single in the second inning to start the game's scoring, but Grace ended the inning with the bases loaded. Ashley Kleinbub executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Clarissa Knight in the third, and Chandler Elliott also plated to give Grace a 3-0 lead.
But the Trojans (26-22, 17-15 CL) transformed the game in the bottom of the third. Taylor ripped off 14 runs on 13 hits, benefitting with two home runs and a two-out error to blow the game open.
Grace was unable to recover from the shock and lost in a run-rule game 15-3. Elliott batted 1-for-2 with a run and a stolen base.
In the second game, Taylor did not have another explosive inning. But the Trojans continued to mute Grace's bats and held on for a 5-2 victory.
The Trojans scored all five of their runs in the second and third innings. Taylor scored twice in the second inning, including one run from a Lady Lancer error. And they tacked on three more runs in the third.
Grace scored its first run in the third inning. Abby Mozingo singled and was sacrificed over to second base. Sam Heim then singled to the outfield to score Mozingo.
In the sixth inning, Knight led off with a walk. She eventually came around to score off a single by Kyleigh Garner. But Grace stranded two runners in scoring position at the end of the inning, which proved costly.
Hannah England tossed the final three innings from the mound, holding Taylor hitless with one strikeout.
Garner hit 2-for-3 with a steal and an RBI, and Mozingo finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Lady Lancers wrap up the regular season this week. Grace plays at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Friday and hosts Taylor on Saturday 1 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day to honor the graduating class.
