GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grace's women's soccer team suffered its third shutout in five games with a 2-0 loss at Davenport.
The Lady Lancers (1-3-1) gave up two second-half goals on Thursday to the Panthers (6-0-1), who remain unbeaten on the season.
Grace was outshot 16-5, mustering just three shots in the first half and two in the second.
The first half was evenly played as possession traded hands between the sides. Grace started sharply and took the first two shots of the game in the first 10 minutes.
In the 10th minute, Grace earned a short free kick near the top of the penalty box. Kristen Bellinger took the shot, but it was deflected wide of goal for a corner kick.
Seven minutes later, Bellinger single-handedly started a counterattack. She teamed up with Kristelle Jadoo to dispossess the Panthers. Bellinger then dribbled by herself into the offensive end of the field and, after a few passes, tried a long shot that went wide.
The match entered halftime 0-0 with Davenport holding an 8-3 advantage in shots.
It didn't take long for Davenport to get on the scoreboard in the second half. The Panthers netted in the 47th minute, scoring from close range on the first shot of the half.
Davenport continued to attack, firing off eight shots with four corner kicks after halftime. Their offense eventually produced a second goal in the 73rd minute, converting a free kick after a chipped pass into the penalty box.
Try as they might, the Lady Lancers only mustered one shot over the final 39 minutes of play as any potential comeback went for naught.
"Today's result is not unexpected. We hoped to avoid a loss but just couldn't on this particular day. This is a match that needed detailed, specific preparation, and we just haven't had enough of that yet," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "Our crew is young and extremely talented. They have the tools individually. But collectively putting all those moving parts together will take a driven dedication. We had sections of very good futbol today, including periods of our best this year. If we make a few really intelligent decisions at key moments, we can help matches like this to turn favorably for us."
Meredith Hollar and Bellinger had four of Grace's five shots in the match, and Liz Van Wormer had the fifth attempt.
Abby Schue made seven saves in 90 minutes as Grace's goalkeeper.
The Lady Lancers will remain on the road Saturday with a trip to No. 18 Hastings (Neb.).
