INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Lancers' tennis squad squared off Saturday at Marian with the Knights earning a hard-fought 6-3 win.
Several sets went to extra points, and the Knights (6-1, 6-0 Crossroads League) won enough to prevail over the Lancers (3-4, 3-3 CL).
Grace could only win one of the three doubles' positions despite all three courts being close. Uros Pajic and Gabe Vervynckt gave Grace a point at No. 2 doubles with a 9-7 victory. Danila Kurkulin and Caleb Yoder came up just short 9-8 at No. 1 doubles, and Adam Yoder and Arturo Fonseca fell 8-5 at No. 3.
Kurkulin rebounded to post 6-4, 7-6 victory at the top singles' spot, and Connor Bates produced a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Adam Yoder battled hard before losing 6-7, 4-6 at No. 4 singles.
"This was a hard-fought match. If we can raise our level of play, we will be right there in the conference tournament," said Grace coach Larry Schuh. "Conner was great for us at six singles, playing there for the first time and getting us a point, and Danila remains undefeated in conference."
The Lancers end the regular season next week, starting with a men's/women's doubleheader against Bethel at Miller Athletic Complex.
