Game Recap: Softball |

SAU and Grace split in Michigan

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The two games between Grace's softball team and Spring Arbor could not have ended differently on Tuesday.

Spring Arbor used a tremendous last-inning rally to beat the Lady Lancers (9-10, 2-2 Crossroads League) 7-6 in the opener. The second game belonged to Grace with a 20-5 thrashing of the Cougars (7-13, 2-2 CL) in a run-rule shortened contest.

The first game went Grace's way until the final half-inning. The Lady Lancers led Spring Arbor 3-2 after six innings of work.

Matters seemed to get even better for Grace as the Lady Lancers plated three more times in the top of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead. Clarissa Knight hit a two-out, two-run triple, and she came home to score on a wild pitch.

But the Cougars showed resolve in front of their home fans, scoring three runs before recording an out. SAU would not be stopped, tying the game with two outs and hitting a walkoff single on the next at-bat for an improbable 7-6 victory.

Knight was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in defeat, and Kati Gregory batted 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Abby Mozingo and Hannah Herbster were each 2-for-5.

Grace took out its revenge in the second game. The Lady Lancers blasted the Cougars for 20 runs on 20 hits in just five innings before the game was called due to the run rule.

The Lady Lancers enjoyed eight extra-base hits, including a home run by Ashley Kleinbub and two doubles from Gregory and Olivia Scarbrough.

Kleinbub was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Herbster hit 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs.

Chandler Elliott recorded three hits, and Gregory and Scarbrough each plated three times. Emily Bobb plated twice, Knight went 2-for-4, and Mariah Roman was a successful 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter.

The Lady Lancers head to St. Francis on Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Grace then hosts Goshen in a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m.
