SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace's baseball team was unable to keep pace with Spring Arbor on Saturday.
The Lancers (12-19-1, 4-10 Crossroads League) lost 8-3 and 6-1 on the road.
In the opener, Grace had three errors and only five hits in an 8-3 defeat. Spring Arbor scored three runs in the second and never trailed again.
Grace did its best to stick with the Cougars (15-18, 8-5 CL). Gavin Bussard belted a two-run double in the third, and Cameron Maxwell hit an RBI single in the fourth to score Austin Baker.
But the Cougars continued to score, pulling away with a run in four of their last five innings at bat.
Maxwell finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Baker was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Bussard hit 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, offense was scarce for the Lancers. Grace amassed just three hits, albeit one as a home run, and Spring Arbor won 6-1.
Spring Arbor led 1-0 after the first inning, and the game seemed destined to remain as a pitchers' duel.Â
Neither team pushed across another run until the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth, Chase Baker led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.
But the Cougars retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the seventh. Overall Spring Arbor outscored Grace 6-1.
Chase Baker hit 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Gabe Douglass and Austin Baker had the other hits in the game for Grace, and Shay Hepler walked twice.
Scottie Clark tossed a full seven innings, giving up six runs with five strikeouts, and Kyle Brunner pitched a perfect eighth inning.
The Lancers will host Huntington on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m.
