Grace and #RV Northwestern draw after 2OT

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's men's soccer team was on the verge of upsetting Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday in a neutral-field contest.

The Lancers (2-2-3) held a 2-1 lead entering the final minute, but Northwestern kept the match alive with a goal in the 90th minute. The game ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw.

"We had the win right there in front of us, and we just didn't make it happen. It's as simple as that," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "Two games through double overtime is difficult. But we need to learn how to suffer and how to muscle our way through to win these games. We will see another game that requires us to gut one out, and we will be ready."

Grace led twice in the game. The Lancers got on the scoreboard first when Colin Cape scored an unassisted goal in the 28th minute.

The lead was short-lived as the Red Raiders (3-3-2), who are receiving votes in the NAIA, tied the game 14 minutes later.

The match went into halftime leveled 2-2 on the scoreboard. Grace had a slight 5-4 shot advantage while both sides took three corner kicks.

Shortly into the second half, Grace took its second lead of the match. Damon Binkley and Brayton Taylor each missed a shot in the opening minutes of the half, and Binkley eventually converted.

At the 58:55 mark, Binkley netted from an assist by Ulisses Miranda to hand Grace a 2-1 lead.

Northwestern ramped up its attack in response and pressed for an equalizer. The Lancers only shot once over the next 20 minutes, but Grace's defense remained firm to keep the lead.

The Red Raiders broke through in the final seconds, however. With less than 30 seconds left on the clock, Northwestern scored to tie the game 2-2. Grace did its best to respond and won a corner kick in the final seconds, but no shot came from the opportunity.

The Lancers struggled to put together dangerous chances in the overtime sessions, taking only one shot combined in the two 10-minute periods. Neither team could find a winner, and the sides settled for a 2-2 draw.

Both teams attempted 11 shots in regulation, and Northwestern outshot Grace 6-1 in overtime.

Taylor, Miranda, Binkley, Togo Narusawa and Marcelo Talamas each tried two shots. Kurt Hamlin made six saves in 110 minutes in goal.

"We have a good team. We are creating opportunities, and our defense is improving every match. But we have to play with more toughness. We have to think more quickly, and we have to convert our opportunities when given the chance," Hotchkin said. "Our conference is solid, and the difference between a win, loss or tie is often how much you care and how much you are willing to suffer to win the game."

The Lancers continue action on Sept. 23 at Ohio Christian.
