GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grace's volleyball team was unable to come home from Michigan with a win, losing twice on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (17-12) were swept by the host school Aquinas in the opener before losing to Siena Heights 3-2 to wrap up the Cornerstone/Aquinas crossover tournament.
Grace's offense sputtered in a 3-0 loss to Aquinas, who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Saints (22-6) had 44 kills on a .286 percentage while Grace struggled to 32 kills on a .094 percentage.
Grace's best set was the first. The Lady Lancers had 16 kills on six errors, but Aquinas eased away to a 25-21 win. Aquinas made quick work in the next two games, winning 25-14 and 25-18.
Kelsee Zuidema had a team-high 11 kills to go along with two block assists, and Gina Novotny tied for match honors with 13 digs.
The Lady Lancers let the final match of the tournament slip away against Siena Heights. Grace won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21 to take a commanding edge in the match.
But the Saints (13-10) showed resolve to battle back into contention and steal the match.Â
The match could have ended in the third set. Siena Heights led 24-21, but Grace scored three straight to force extra points, aided by a kill from Zuidema and a service ace by Alexa Hill.
But the Saints stayed alive by winning the next two points to win 26-24.
Grace dropped the fourth set 25-20 and quickly fell behind 9-6 in the decisive fifth set. The Lady Lancers rallied ahead with four unanswered points, thanks to a kill from Zuidema, a block from Hanna Leach and Hill, and an ace by Emily Sharp.
Siena Heights won four of the next five points, however, and secured the win 15-12.
Zuidema led all players with 21 kills, and Deborah Michalski recorded her first double-double with a career-high 11 kills and 14 digs.
Hill also tallied a double-double with 47 assists and 14 digs, Novotny dug up 21 balls, and Makaela Lochmueller produced 11 kills.
Gabbey Harrington added eight kills and five digs, and Caroline Mayer and Makayla Bell each chipped in with 11 assists.
At the conclusion of the weekend, Zuidema was named First Team All-Tournament, and Caylie Teel earned a spot on the Second Team.
The Lady Lancers will gear up for the final stretch of regular season games. Grace's next match is at league-leading Marian on Wednesday night.
