WINONA LAKE, Ind. - After a strong doubles' performance, Grace's men's tennis team faded in an 8-1 defeat to Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday.
The Lancers could have led 3-0 after doubles' play, but two close contests both went the way of the Wildcats (7-0, 6-0 Crossroads League).
Pavle Popovic and Diego Zamora at No. 1 doubles came up with the only point of the afternoon for the Lancers with an 8-3 victory.
Max Rozas and Caleb Yoder fell 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, and Conner Bates and Jacob Gray lost by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Rozas almost won at No. 1 singles as well. He split the first two sets 5-7, 6-3 before losing in a superset 9-11.
Popovic battled sickness to lose narrowly at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3. Arturo Fonseca was the next closest Lancer (4-4, 2-3 CL) at No. 4 singles when he lost 6-2, 6-2.
"We played hard, but we lost some close matches," said Grace head coach Andy Lewis. "Max might have won at one singles if they played a full third set, and Pavle was close even though he was sick. Two and three doubles lost by one break. We played well and are gaining momentum for the end of the season. Our effort was great tonight, which is encouraging to see as a coach."
The Lancers end the week on the road at Trine on Thursday and at Taylor on Saturday.
