WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's tennis team put itself in a strong position to beat No. 21 Marian on Tuesday.
But after claiming the early doubles' point, Grace only won one court in singles' play to suffer defeat against the Knights (7-1, 7-1 CL).
The loss means the Lancers (8-3, 7-2 CL) will end the year third in the Crossroads League while Marian will place second. Grace will host a quarterfinal matchup with the No. 6 finisher in the Crossroads League Tournament on Oct. 1. The semifinals, and a potential rematch with Marian, would take place on Oct. 3.
Grace won doubles thanks to the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Max Rozas and Fabricio Galvan battled to a 6-3 win at No. 2, and Jacob Gray and Ramiro Candia won by the same score at No. 3.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, their momentum did not continue. Rozas continued his undefeated singles' season by winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. Galvan dropped a three-set match (2-6, 6-3, 1-6) at No. 3 singles, and Mauricio Corty also lost in three sets at No. 6 (3-6, 7-5, 5-10).
The Lancers close out the regular season on Friday with a home match against Trine at 4 p.m.
