FT. WAYNE, Ind. - Playing without three top players, the Lancers battled through adversity to claim a 4-3 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene and secure a spot in the top half of the Crossroads League standings. The match was played at Swinney Park in Ft. Wayne and was a make-up of a postponement early in the season.
The top three singles players for Grace were out, leaving Coach
Marcus Moore with only five available athletes and little room for error. Mount Vernon Nazarene quickly secured the doubles point, meaning the Lancers would need to win four singles matches to come out on top.
Morgan Mast played in the No. 1 spot and pulled out a 7-6, 6-2 win, while
Lauryn Riegsecker took the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-4.
Kiersten Martin had a huge comeback in the No. 3 contest, dropping the first set, but rallying to win 0-6, 7-6, 11-9.
After Grace dropped the No. 4 match in three tough sets,
Gretchen Adams was on the court in the No. 5 singles position. She won the first set 7-6, then held on to take the second set 6-4 and confirm the win for the Lancers.
Grace (6-2, 5-2 CL) is now guaranteed no worse than the fourth-seed in next week's Crossroads League Tournament. The Lancers complete league play with a trip to Marian on Saturday.
