GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace's women's soccer team registered a 2-1 win against Goshen on Wednesday night.
Danae Moriarty sparked Grace with a goal and an assist, and Madison Tuma also netted for the No. 20 Lady Lancers (8-3-1, 3-2 Crossroads League).
Grace controlled the match with its possession for much of the contest. The Lady Lancers attacked early with shots on goal from Moriarty and Kailey Burrell.
The breakthrough moment came in the 23rd minute. Grace quickly advanced along the left sideline. Lea Fricke and Burrell combined to clear a cross into the box, and Moriarty pounded her header to the far post to give Grace a 1-0 lead.
Grace would take that 1-0 advantage into halftime. The Lady Lancers outshot the Maple Leafs 7-2 before halftime; five of Grace's seven shots were on goal as well.
Grace had a few early chances in the second half. Ashley VandenBoom nearly sparked a goal with a dynamic attack, splitting a few defenders before rifling a close shot that was saved.
The Lady Lancers had a few more dangerous moments, including a pair of efforts from Moriarty. Tuma had a close-range shot blocked as well.
Tuma didn't have to wait long for another attempt. After a short corner from Moriarty and JJ Aalbue, Aalbue sent a well-placed cross into the penalty box. Tuma took care of the rest, heading the shot into the net to double the Lady Lancers' lead in the 63rd minute.
The Maple Leafs managed to score against the run of play, using a long shot to ruin Grace's clean sheet.
Grace continued as the aggressors, pinning the Maple Leafs back with a number of offensive chances in a row.
Aalbue nearly assisted another goal in the final 10 minutes, picking out Simone Castaneda with a leading pass; but Castaneda's shot went high.
Burrell also had a strong look with four minutes remaining that was pushed right of the goal, and Moriarty's late volley was also saved.Â
Grace finished the game with a commanding 19-5 advantage in shots, including 12-3 after halftime. The Lady Lancers also took the only five corner kicks of the match.
Thirteen of Grace's 19 shots were on goal, led by four shots on goal from Moriarty.
The Lady Lancers are home for the next two games. Saturday will see Grace host Bethel at 7 p.m. The match will also be Senior Night for the Lady Lancers.
