Lady Lancers rally for dramatic five-set win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Saturday's match between Grace's volleyball team and Spring Arbor went down to the wire.

Grace showed resilience, twice battling back from one-set deficits to rally for a 3-2 victory at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The win guarantees Grace's spot in the Crossroads League Tournament with three matches yet to play. The Lady Lancers (10-19, 5-10 CL) can finish anywhere from No. 6-8 depending on next week's results.

Grace racked up 23 more kills, 22 more assists and 3 more aces than the Cougars in a wild back-and-forth affair.

In the opening set, Spring Arbor pushed ahead early and led for most of the set. Grace managed to even the score at 18-18 after three straight kills from Morgan Syoen, Alisha Leffring and Cassadi Colbert.

But the Cougars quickly squelched Grace's run, winning seven of the next eight points to claim the opener 25-19.

Grace jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, but the Cougars stayed within range. SAU rattled off five straight points to turn a four-point Grace lead into an 18-17 advantage for SAU.

Colbert came up huge for Grace down the stretch, however. The outside hitter pounded out three kills over the final rallies as Grace evened the match with a 25-21 win.

The Cougars won by eight in the third set despite having just six kills. Grace had 13 kills in comparison, but the Lady Lancers also had 12 attack errors.

Facing a must-win fourth set, Grace showed no signs of fear. The Lady Lancers stormed in front by scoring the first eight points of the set. Grace pushed its lead to 14-1 as SAU could find no answers to the Lady Lancers' play. Livia Tate had three kills during Grace's early charge.

Grace rolled away to a 25-11 win, sending the match to a winner-take-all fifth set.

The Lady Lancers' momentum carried into the fifth set. Grace won the first four points, sparked by an ace from Emma Blackford and kills from Jadyn Block and Leffring.

Grace pushed ahead 6-1, but SAU was not prepared to go down without a fight. The Cougars tallied five unanswered points to slice the Lady Lancers' lead down to one at 12-11.

But after a timeout, Colbert came up with a much-needed kill to turn the tide. Swanson followed up with another kill, and Swanson teamed up with Tate for a block point on the final play to win the match 15-11.

Tate impressed with 13 kills on a .400 percentage, adding three block assists. Colbert tied for match honors with 13 kills.

Leffring had 12 kills, Block notched 11 kills with two block assists, and Syoen added 30 assists, 9 digs and 5 kills.

Defensively, Grace put four players in double-digit digs; Liz Schmidt led all players with 19 digs, Grace Erwin had 17 digs, 6 assists and 2 aces, Paige Vander Goot had 11 digs with three aces, and McKenzie Stakely added 10 digs.

Swanson had a well-rounded performance with 7 kills, 8 digs and 2 block assists, Blackford served up three aces, and Riley Owens had 13 assists and nine digs.

The Lady Lancers hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match at No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan. Grace then ends the regular season with home matches on Friday at 7 p.m. against Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Huntington.
