Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lancers end regular season with win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 victory over Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.

The NAIA 12th-ranked Lancers and Cougars will see each other again shortly; Grace finished the year as the No. 2 seed in the Crossroads League and will face seventh-seeded MVNU next week on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament.

Saturday will be a postseason doubleheader at 1st Source Bank Field; Grace's women will host MVNU at 4 p.m., and the men will host MVNU at 7 p.m.

The Lancers (10-1-6, 5-1-3 CL) scored twice in the closing 20 minutes to break open the Cougars' defense.

The teams had sparse chances in the beginning minutes of the first half as a midfield battle ensued.

Grace's time on the ball increased as the half progressed, gradually creating more chances for the Lancers.

The first strong chance came 15 minutes into the game. Juan Camilo Garcia generated the chance, weaving through a crowd of defenders in the box. He eventually picked out Felipe Gruber with a pass, but Gruber's shot in the penalty box was blocked wide for a corner kick.

Gruber also had another attempt in the first half when his long-range blast was stopped with a diving save.

By the middle portions of the half, the Lancers seemed in control. Martim Sequiera had a quick strike in the 30th minute that whizzed wide of the net.

The Cougars' defense remained organized and stout, however. Despite a heavy amount of possession, the Lancers found just a handful of shots before halftime.

The match entered halftime scoreless. Grace outshot MVNU 4-2 and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks as well.

Grace pressed early for the go-ahead goal; Sequiera and Nelu Calcai both had strong attempts in the first five minutes.

The Cougars came close to scoring nine minutes into the second half with a shot against the run of play, but the ball rolled wide of the goal.

Garcia nearly responded a few minutes later with a brilliant individual run, but his shot was saved after a creative run through the Cougars' defense.

After a period of limited chances, Grace generated another dangerous attempt with 22 minutes left. Jonny Mora served a pass into the box. Sequiera trapped the ball, spun around a defender and tried a quick-fire shot, but it sailed above the crossbar.

The breakthrough moment came with 18 minutes to play. Garcia sparked the chance with an advance from Grace's defensive end. He then played a leading pass that found Daniel Santos Rosa.

Rosa squared a pass to Sequiera, and Sequiera held off a defender and pounded his shot by the goalkeeper.

Nine minutes later, Grace had doubled its lead. Santos Rosa got a chance to score and made good on it. He dribbled calmly in the penalty box, juking a defender and slotting his shot inside the near post to beat the outstretched gloves of the diving goalkeeper.

The Cougars tried a few shots in desperation over the final few minutes, but the Lancers' defense held firm to secure the shutout.

Matteo Conci needed to make just one save across 90 minutes in the shutout. He was protected well by Dan Allen, Flavio Cruz, Colt Tanner and Diogo Lopes.

Saturday had several special ceremonies before the game. The team began with Senior Day to honor its graduating class.

Part of that Senior Day was to allow injured senior Ze Maria Goncalves to start the match and take the opening kickoff before being subbed off.
