Grace advances to Crossroads League semifinals

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win in a Crossroads League quarterfinal matchup with Mt. Vernon on Saturday night.

The win moves Grace onto the semifinals where they will host Spring Arbor on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Spring Arbor advanced via an upset win over Indiana Wesleyan.

Both teams threatened early in the match and each team was awarded a corner kick within the first five minutes of play. The Cougars had the best of the chances as their point-blank shot was stopped from finding the goal by David Marquez who cleared the dangerous shot.

The two squads continued the trade offensive attacks as the Lancers tried a pair of crossing passes that were unable to connect.

By the midpoint of the quarter the chances were mostly even but neither team was able to draw blood as the game continued as a scoreless affair.

Felipe Gruber snuck behind Mt. Vernon's defense but his ensuing shot trailed high of the crossbar.

Late in the half Grace once again threatened with a sustained attack. The Lancers had a pair tries at the ball as it bounced precariously in front of goal. Grace couldn't find a clean shooting lane on goal and the game went to the half break still tied at zero.

Both teams had three shots in the first half. Mt. Vernon held an advantage in corner kicks at 4-2.

The Cougars entered the second half with a furry and nearly netted the game's first goal.

Just three minutes into the second frame Matteo Conci was forced to make an alert save after the Cougars rocketed a shot on goal.

Mt. Vernon's pressure forced Grace into a handful of midfield turnovers which the Cougars turned into a pair of scoring chances. Conci was up to task however as he denied Mt. Vernon the go-ahead goal.

Grace responded well to Mt. Vernon's push and soon found goal for the first marker of the night.

Gruber made a long diagonal pass towards Mt. Vernon's penalty box. Martim Sequeira flipped a pass to Simone Scanferlato who took a touch and finished cleanly.

After snatching the 1-0 lead the Lancers' lead was nearly doubled as Gruber had an in close chance but his shot went high.

The Cougars had a flurry of chances in the game's waning moments but Conci was up to the task each and every time as the Lancers held on for the 1-0 win.

As the final horn sounded, the teams were even in shots as both teams fired eight towards goals. Conci stopped every shot he faced notching his 10th clean sheet of the season.
