Lady Lancers slip in road tilt

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Grace's volleyball team came up empty on its longest road trip of the Crossroads League season.

The Lady Lancers lost 3-0 at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.

The Cougars (17-4, 4-4 Crossroads League) were efficient on offense, hitting 39 kills on a .298 percentage; the Lady Lancers (7-12, 2-6 CL) had 41 kills but on a .175 percentage.

In the first set, the score was knotted midway through at 14 apiece. But the Cougars produced four straight points to gain an edge.

Grace was unable to fully recover and fell by a narrow 25-22 margin.

The Lady Lancers scored the first three points of the second set and grabbed a 6-1 lead after a block from Livia Tate and Jadyn Ross.

But the middle portions of the set belonged to MVNU; the Cougars regained the lead at 12-11 and never looked back en route to an eight-point win.

Grace found itself in a big hole to start the third set and nearly found a way out. MVNU scored the first three points and grabbed a comfortable 14-7 lead.

MVNU was in cruise control with a 23-13 lead, but Grace had one more rally. The Lady Lancers scored eight of the next nine points in a furious rally. Cassadi Colbert had three kills during Grace's run.

But the Cougars held on to win 25-21 after a service error, ending the day with a sweep.

Colbert had a team-high 11 kills on a .200 percentage, and Tate had eight kills and two block assists.

Ross finished with 6 kills, 8 digs and 3 block assists, and Sahara Bee added nine kills on a .286 percentage.

Katie Swanson tallied five kills on 11 attempts to go along with three block assists, while Riley Owens had a match-high 31 assists and seven digs. Grace Erwin's nine digs and Liz Schmidt's seven digs aided the back row.

The Lady Lancers remain on the road two more times this week. Grace will travel to Huntington on Friday and Goshen on Saturday.
