Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Grace settles for scoreless draw at USF

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In a match in which Grace's women's soccer team had a clear offensive edge, the Lancers had to settle for a 0-0 tie.

Grace pelted St. Francis's goal with 18 shot attempts, but the Lancers were unable to find the back of the net in the scoreless draw.

The Cougars were outshot 18-8 in the game but managed to keep Grace off the scoreboard.

USF actually took the first three shots of the game, which did not set the tone for the rest of the match.

Grace produced a golden chance 13 minutes into the match. Cassidy Felger broke free in the midfield and blasted a shot from the edge of the penalty box that beat the goalkeeper. But Felger's shot caromed down off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

Ten minutes later, Rylee Burns beat a defender and tried a shot from a tight angle, but it struck the side netting.

The Lancers also had shots in the final 12 minutes of the half from Shannon Farnsworth and Rosalie Gefrorer that were saved.

The teams entered halftime without a goal; Grace took six of the 10 shots in the first half.

The second half belonged to the Lancers. Grace racked up 12 shots to go along with a pair of corner kicks.

Felger threatened early again to begin the second half. After dribbling around a Cougar midfielder, Felger tried a deep shot that bent wide of the net.

After earning a 30-yard free kick, Gefrorer let sail a long attempt that missed the mark.

The Cougars did their best to counter shortly after, eventually hitting the crossbar on one of their few second-half shots.

But the Lancers had a steady stream of shots lined up to test the Cougars.

Not long after USF's shot, Grace generated another strong chance. Gefrorer led Lilli Oberhoff with a pass into the penalty box. Oberhoff's shot was denied with a kick save by USF's goalkeeper.

Two minutes after that, Felger shot from deep again with her attempt rolling not far from the mouth of the goal.

Burns used her speed to connect with a pass from Feline Abbo. Burns dribbled along the top of the penalty box and fired toward the near post, but the Cougars' goalkeeper made a diving save to stop the shot.

With 10 minutes to go, Oberhoff picked out Tori Twombly at the top of the box, but Twombly's attempt went wide.

Each side had a few shots over the closing 10 minutes, but neither team could find a dramatic late winner.

Sofia Williams made four saves to collect the clean sheet in goal; she was protected well by Jasmin Slump, Elizabeth Maciejewski, Feline Abbo, Liz Bayert and Megan DeBoest.

Felger and Gefrorer led Grace with four shots.

The Lancers end the week by traveling to No. 2 Spring Arbor on Saturday at 7 p.m.
