WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The conference tournament run for Grace's women's tennis team came to an end on Tuesday with the No. 4 seed falling 4-3 at home to Spring Arbor in the quarterfinal.
The home team seized the early momentum by winning the doubles point.
Molli Runestad and
Kiersten Martin got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1 victory to set up
Anna Graves and
Lydia Ruegsegger to clinch the first point of the day.Â
Grace picked up points from
Kiersten Martin and
Alejandra Sandoval in singles play, but the Cougars were able to escape with the remaining four points.
Sandoval continued her dominance in the middle of the rotation, winning 6-2, 6-1. She has compiled a 10-1 singles record so far this season. Martin dropped only one game to secure her point, 6-1, 6-0.Â
The match came down to the final point. In three of the four points Spring Arbor earned, Grace held the advantage having won the first set in each. But the Cougars were resilient and were able to come back to win all three points in a tiebreaker and complete the upset.Â
The Lancers have one fall match remaining on Oct. 11 against Saint Mary's College. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Don Cramer Tennis Courts.
