WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team was unable to complete the season sweep of Bethel on Wednesday night.
The Lancers (15-7, 6-5 Crossroads League) fell 3-0 to the Pilots at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Grace's offense struggled to find a rhythm in the match, collectively hitting at a .083 percentage across the three sets.
The Lancers found itself behind early in each of the three sets to the Pilots (19-3, 8-3 CL), further hurting their chances.
To begin the match, Bethel scored the first two points and raced in front 9-2. Before long, the Lancers found themselves in a 19-8 hole.
Grace showed signs of life, however, scoring five quick points to pull within six. Kills from Alisha Leffring, Katie Swanson and Livia Tate helped Grace claw all the way back to 22-18, but the Pilots recovered and wrapped up the set 25-19.
Grace played itself out of contention in the first set with 10 attacking errors.
Grace's offense was much better in the second set, producing 12 kills with only five errors (.200 percent).Â
Bethel aced the first two serves to start the second set, but Grace immediately regained the lead. Two kills apiece from Swanson and Jadyn Ross gave Grace a 6-4 lead.
But a pair of 4-0 spurts from the Pilots gave Bethel separation at 18-13. A timeout from Grace resulted in back-to-back kills from Ross, but the Lancers were unable to fully make up the deficit.Â
The Pilots ended the set with a kill and a block to win 25-20.
Bethel's attack was hard for Grace to stop in the third set. The Pilots had 15 kills with only two errors compared to seven kills for the Lancers.
Grace found itself trailing 10-3 to begin the third set. The Lancers were unable to rally and fell by 11.
For the match, Ross had 7 kills, 5 digs and 2 block assists, and she was also perfect in 19 serve receptions.
Swanson had seven kills and a block assist, and Alisha Leffring had five kills on nine swings (.444 percentage), adding a solo block and two block assists.
Anna Ballengee tallied five kills, Riley Owens tallied 11 assists and eight digs, and Morgan Syoen had 10 assists and four digs.
McKenzie Stakely led Grace with 10 digs, and Tate ended up with three kills and two block assists.
The Lancers will be off for a week, traveling to Taylor on Oct. 11 for their next match.
