WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's women's tennis team is poised to get the 2023-24 campaign underway. Former Lady Lancer standout Emily Ackerman (Mast) begins her second year coaching the program.
"I am excited and optimistic for the upcoming season. We have a great group with a lot of potential," said Ackerman.
The Lady Lancers will feature four returners from last fall with the addition of two transfer student-athletes and three freshman newcomers.
A pair of seniors will lead the way for Grace. Anna Graves, who had a stellar 2022-23 campaign, compiled a 13-2 singles record. She went undefeated in conference play at No. 1 singles, earning All-League honors in the process.
Graduate student Kiersten Martin spent most of the season in the No. 3 slot and boasts a 25-17 career singles record in a Lancer uniform.
A pair of juniors each made an impact last season. Lydia Ruegsegger made her mark at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, tallying a 20-12 overall record a year ago. Hallie Mast also broke into the rotation, winning seven matches at the No. 5 singles spot.
"One area we hope to excel in is doubles play," said Ackerman. "We have experienced doubles pairs with great chemistry. Earning the doubles' point will give us momentum as the match transitions to singles' play."
A pair of transfers will look to make an impact this season. Jimena Ramirez, an NJCAA All-American, will join the ranks after sitting out the fall season. Alejandra Sandoval, who joined the team last spring, brings experience and consistency.
"Shot precision and consistency will play a key role to help set the tone and take control of the match," added Ackerman. "We have great depth this year which will allow us to be strategic with pairings and keep everyone fresh.
A trio of freshmen join the roster. Amy Adams (Northwood High School), Lydia Miller (Tippecanoe Valley), and Molli Runestad (Leo) will make their Lancer debuts this fall.
The season opens up with a Crossroads League matchup on Saturday at Spring Arbor. The home opener for the Lady Lancers will be Sept. 5 against Goshen at the Don Cramer Tennis Courts.
"We have great leadership with a united group that is mentally tough," commented Ackerman."Our group of ladies put in a lot of hard work this summer, and we look forward to how it translates to the court."
