WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's tennis team continued its unbeaten run to start the season with a 6-1 win over #RV Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon. The Lancers are now one win away from claiming their second straight regular season title.
The home team jumped out to the early lead and never looked back, winning the doubles point to start the match.Â
Facundo Paredes and
Javier Gallego teamed up at No. 1 doubles and came out on top 6-3. They were followed by
Luis Cordoba and
Artur Pons to clinch the first point of the day 6-4.
Grace kept the pressure on in singles play to win the first three points to clinch their seventh consecutive win of the season and take a commanding 4-0 in the match.Â
Gregori (No. 3) led off the singles portion in short order with a straight-set triumph 6-1, 6-2. Paredes matched him with a 6-4, 6-1 victory to put the Lancers one point away. Gallego sealed the deal with 7-6(4), 6-2 showing at No. 1 doubles to clinch the match.
The final two points came from Cordoba (No. 5) and
Artur Pons (No. 6) to cap off a 6-1 win for the No. 17-ranked Lancers.
Salva Pons nearly made it a clean sweep, but dropped a tough third set tiebreaker.
Grace will look to clinch the regular season title on Saturday at Huntington. It will be a winner-take-all match against the No. 22 Foresters. The victor will earn the top seed in the Crossroads League tournament beginning Oct. 3. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
