HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace's women's tennis team concluded conference play with a sweep of Huntington on Saturday afternoon. With the 7-0 victory, the Lancers (7-3, 5-3 CL) finished the regular season in fourth place in the conference standings.
The visitors seized the early momentum by winning the doubles point. After splitting No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Mollis Runestad and
Kiersten Martin paired up to clinch the point, 7-6(2) to earn the first point of the day.
The Lancers dominated singles play to complete the sweep. They won early and often to put the match out of reach.Â
Alejandra Sandoval (6-1, 6-0) dropped only one game to get the first point from individual play.
Lydia Ruegsegger followed her with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to put Grace one point away from clinching the match.
Jimena Ramirez provided the all-important fourth point, winning her match, 6-1, 6-1.Â
Anna Graves needed a little bit more time to finish off her match, but was able to keep the sweep alive 6-4, 7-6(6).
The final two points were secured from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the lineup.
Molli Runestad (6-0, 6-2) and
Kiersten Martin (6-1, 6-0) made quick work to end the regular season on a high note and complete the rout.
The Lancers will switch gears and participate in the ITA Regionals Sept. 27-30. The following week, they will turn their attention to the Crossroads League tournament, beginning on Oct. 3. Grace will host the first round matchup versus Spring Arbor.Â
