INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's baseball team continued conference play with a doubleheader at Marian on Saturday afternoon. The final two games on the four-game set went to the Knights 15-5 and 6-2.
Grace (8-20, 2-14 CL) struck first in the opening inning by benefiting from three walks and a hit by pitch to get on the board.
Matt Friesema capped the two-run inning with a sac fly to score
Maximo De Leon.
Marian (15-12, 10-6) had a rebuttal in the bottom half to go ahead 3-2 before the Lancers tied the score in the second.Â
Patrick Danforth opened the second with a double down the line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. De Leon had the RBI with a single to even the score.
The tie ballgame was broken when the home team put up a crooked number in the second, scoring eight runs to take control of the game.Â
Later in the fifth inning, the Lancers once again took advantage of wild pitching to manufacture two runs. A single from
Annikan Pettit and walks to De Leon and
Austin Carr loaded the bases for
Ryan Stark. His fielder's choice plated the first run. Friesema singled after another walk in the inning to bring home the other run.
After three runs in the home half of the fifth, the Knights held their ten-run lead through the seventh inning, ending the game early 15-5.
Annikan Pettit was the lone batter with multiple hits, but three batters reached safety at least twice. De Leon went 1 for 2 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and a walk.
Grace led 2-1 after three innings in the second game of the day. The teams traded runs in those innings.Â
Two doubles in the second frame gave the visitors the early lead. Pettit went down the left field line and Friesema went down the right field line to drive him home.Â
After the Knights tied the game in the previous inning, the Lancers retook the lead in the third.Â
De Leon singled to start the inning and a throwing error on
Sean Gannon's sacrifice bunt attempt allowed him to score all the way from first.Â
The Knights, however, scored five unanswered runs to flip the script and forge ahead with a 6-2 lead.
Grace looked to start something in the final at-bat. Three walks in the inning loaded the bases with two outs, but the rally was snuffed out with the tying run at the plate.Â
The Lancers outhit the Knights and earned five walks in the game, but stranded ten runners on the basepaths overall.
Austin Carr finished the game 1 for 1 with two walks, and Friesema went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a walk.
Grace returns to action on March 28 for the start of a four-game set with Goshen at Tom  Roy - UPI Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
