WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon, winning 17-0 and 6-1 over Goshen.
The first game was an offensive display as the Lancers (10-20, 4-14 CL) pounded out 15 hits while scoring 17 runs in the contest. The back end of the doubleheader was more of a pitcher's game as
Evan Etchison scattered seven hits en route to his fifth win of the season, 6-1.
Grace scored at least one run in every inning in the opener with six runs coming in the second frame.
In the first, the Lancers manufactured a run without registering a hit.
Maximo De Leon reached via hit by pitch and moved into scoring position after a stolen base and multiple walks.
Sean Gannon had the RBI with a groundout.Â
The game broke open in the second with a six-run inning.
Mason Meyer got it all started with a single. The next two batters reached, loading the bases. De Leon clubbed a 2-RBI double to start the scoring.
Matt Friesema followed with another double to bring home two more. The last two runs of the inning came after a throwing error and a sac fly.Â
Grace added three more runs over the next two innings to pull ahead 10-0. Both runs in the third came from aggressive baserunning from the home team. With runners on the corners, a stolen base from the trail runner allowed the lead runner to come home each time.Â
Gannon opened the fourth with a double and his courtesy runner came around to score on
Ryan Stark's RBI single.
Seven more runs were scored in the final two innings, ending the nine-inning contest early. With one out in the fifth, the Lancers smacked three straight singles followed by a defensive miscue to plate two runs.
Grant Hartley knocked in two more with his single to right.
Meyer and
Keenan LeBlanc opened the sixth with a single and a double, scoring a run on the LeBlanc hit. De Leon followed later with an RBI double, and he later scored on a misplayed grounder to third base.
Sam Justice pitched a gem, scattering two hits over 6.0 scoreless innings. He fanned four batters on the day.
Joey Springer pitched the final inning, maintaining the shutout in the process.
Two Lancer hitters had at least three hits. De Leon went 3 for 3 with 4 runs, 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases and a walk. Meyer contributed three hits and two runs. Grace had five extra-base hits in the game.
The scoring remained steady for Grace in the second game, scoring in all but one inning.
De Leon led off the bottom half of the first with a hit by pitch and moved to third on a single from Friesema. He scored from third on a sac fly from
Austin Carr.
In the next inning, Goshen leveled the score. The tie only lasted until the bottom half when Grace took the lead for good with a pair of runs.
Meyer singled to lead off the frame and he scored on Pat Danforth's two-run blast on a full count to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Lancers plated a run in each of the final three innings to extend the lead. LeBlanc singled and scored on Danforth's single in the fourth.
An inning later, Carr doubled and later touched home on Hartley's sac fly.Â
In the final at-bat, three straight singles loaded the bases and a wild pitch plated the final run of the game.Â
Etchison followed up the stellar pitching performance from game one with a complete game to earn the victory. He added seven more strikeouts to his season total, bringing him within ten Ks of the all-time career record.Â
Grace pounded out double-digit hits again in game two with 12. Danforth was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Friesema and LeBlanc added two hits apiece. De Leon added two more stolen bases.
Grace will conclude its four-game series with the Maple Leafs with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tom  Roy - UPI Park.
