Lancers outlasted by No. 13 Evangels

Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team came up short in a top-25 clash with No. 13 Mid-America Christian on Saturday afternoon.

The seventh ranked Lancers and the Evangels were tied at one at the half, but a second half penalty kick lifted MACU past Grace.

MACU drew first blood early in the contest after precision passing allowed the Evangels a point-blank goal for the go-ahead marker.

The Evangels continued to pressure the Lancers, directing two more shots on goal but Grace's defense held firm.

The second goal of the game again came on the heels of a beautiful passing play, but this time it was Grace on the scoring end of things.

Daniel Santos Rosa played a ball deep into the Evangels' end of the field. Josh Cruz used his speed to win a race to the ball before crossing a pass to Kyle Holwerda who sliced the ball past the keeper to tie the game at one.

The Evangels controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the half but neither team was able to break the deadlock by the halftime intermission.

MACU held a narrow advantage in shots (3-2) and corner kicks (3-2). Both teams were whistled for four fouls.

Grace had the first shot of the second half but the Lancers' try sailed high.

The physicality began to intensify in the second half, as the final frame saw a combined five cards handed out.

At the midpoint of the second half, MACU was awarded a penalty kick after a collision in the box. The Evangels took advantage of the penalty kick opportunity to edge ahead 2-1.

Things seemed to turn in the Lancers favor just moments later after a MACU player was given his second yellow card of the match, resulting in the Evangels playing a man down for the final 20 minutes of action.

The Lancers were unable to capitalize on the man advantage, dropping the contest by a final mark of 2-1.

Grace was outshot 10-3 in the game, while both teams had four corner kicks. Matteo Conci made three saves in goal for Grace.

The Lancers will return to action on Saturday for a showdown with No. 3 St. Thomas. It will be the first of three consecutive opponents that Grace plays that are in the top-10 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
