MARION, Ind. - Grace's women's tennis team completed a historic road victory on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers knocked off No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan 4-3, giving Grace its biggest upset win in recorded history.
Grace was behind early in doubles action, needing a come-from-behind effort. Once the dust settled, the Lancers had battled back and held the advantage after doubles action concluded.
Jimena Ramirez and
Alejandra Sandoval partnered together to even the score with their 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The decisive point came from
Geraldine Salinas and
Lydia Ruegsegger to put the Lancers on the board first.
Ruegsegger was first to finish on the singles side 6-2, 6-1, extending Grace's lead to 2-0. Sandoval finished shortly thereafter to put the visitors on the verge of a historic victory. Her straight-set win went 6-1, 6-2.
The Wildcats clawed back into the contest with the next three points, applying immense pressure to level the score at three apiece. Wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 brought new life to the match.
The culminating point came down to the No. 6 court where
Molli Runestad came out on top 6-4, 6-2 to send the Lancers into a celebration.
The win marks the first against the Wildcats in recent memory and puts Grace in a tie for third place in the conference standings with three matches remaining.
Grace returns to the friendly confines on Monday, Sept. 16 for another Crossroads League tilt. The Lancers welcome Huntington to the Don Cramer Tennis Courts for an 11 a.m. match.
