Volleyball grabs sweep of USF

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A balanced attack led Grace's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over St. Francis on Wednesday.

The No. 19 Lancers (10-2, 4-1 Crossroads League) continued their impressive start to the season. The win comes fresh off Grace tying for its best NAIA ranking in program history (No. 19) earlier in the day.

Grace had four players collect at least six kills; the squad hit at a .262 percentage in an efficient outing.

Grace's offense seemed to get better as the match continued.

In the first set, the trio of Anna Ballengee, Alisha Voss and Jadyn Ross powered Grace's attack. The three players combined for 13 of Grace's 15 kills in the set.

Grace ran away with a 25-19 win in the first set, and the Lancers' dominance seemed to grow.

In the second set, Grace's defense boosted the team. The Cougars were held to a negative hitting percentage (-.067).

The Lancers racked up six block points during the set, led by two block assists each from Livia Tate, Voss and Ross.

The Cougars made the Lancers work hard to secure the sweep in the third set. Both teams hit the ball well with 16 kills from the Cougars and 15 from the Lancers.

But Grace was more efficient down the stretch as late points from Tate, Voss and Ballengee helped finalize the 25-23 victory.

Ballengee produced 10 kills on a .364 percentage, and Ross had eight kills (.389 percentage) and three block assists.

Voss was a force with eight kills on 13 swings (.538) to go along with two solos and two block assists, and Tate amassed 6 kills (.385), 1 solo and 3 block assists.

Morgan Syoen flirted with a double-double with 17 assists and seven digs, and Liz Schmidt produced a match-high 15 digs.

The Lancers are back home on Saturday, hosting Bethel for a 1 p.m. match at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
