SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - A hard-fought match went against Grace's volleyball team on Saturday.
The Lancers lost 3-1 at Spring Arbor with two sets going to extra points.
Grace had one more kill than SAU, but 30 attack errors and three fewer blocks hurt the Lancers' cause in the match.
The first set was the longest of the four in the match. The score was even with Grace holding a slight 12-11 lead. The Lancers then won six of the next seven points thanks to two kills and a block from Livia Tate.
Grace built up a 23-15 lead before the Cougars rattled off seven unanswered points. SAU eventually went on a 10-1 run and served for the set at 25-24.
The Lancers held off three set points before finally rallying to win the set 30-28. Tate had a late solo block and a kill to ice the victory.
The second set was another nail biter. Grace earned an 18-12 advantage before SAU surged again.
The Cougars used an 11-3 run to propel in front, eventually securing a 25-23 win.
In the third set, Spring Arbor held Grace to 10 kills. The Cougars won by 10 to take control of the match.
But the fourth set proved to be yet another thriller. The teams could barely be separated in the set.
Grace edged ahead 21-19 after an ace from Olivia Martinez and a kill from Tate. The score remained tied at 23s and 24s, but the Cougars managed to end the match on a block and a kill, taking the set 26-24.
Levyn Snow owned a match-high 15 kills on a .238 percentage, Anna Elkin posted 14 kills, and Molly Hofmann earned 10 kills on a .207 percentage.
Tate produced 8 kills (.263), 1 solo block and 2 block assists, and Leah Henderson added 5 kills, 1 solo block and 1 block assist.
Grace had three players post double-doubles, including Carsyn Witt (19 assists, 22 digs), Liz Schmidt (14 digs, 13 assists) and Reese McCutchan (17 assists, 11 digs).
Martinez and Emma Blackford each tallied 11 digs with Martinez acing twice.
The Lancers return home twice next week, including Wednesday (7 p.m.) versus St. Francis and Saturday (1 p.m.) against Bethel.
