MARION, Ind. - A Top-25 battle went against Grace's women's soccer team on Wednesday evening.
The Lancers fell 1-0 at No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan as a last-minute goal proved to be the only deciding factor. It marks Grace's first defeat of the season, ending 11 straight unbeaten matches to begin the season for the Lancers (9-1-2, 2-1 Crossroads League).
The teams combined for just one shot over the first 20 minutes of the game. But the Lancers asserted themselves midway into the opening frame.
The Lancers began to control possession, resulting in a series of chances. Grace's first shot came 21 minutes into the match when Ellie Grieser's attempt was saved.
Nora Pollock, Rylee Burns and Grieser also took shots a few minutes apart from each other that were denied.
The match entered halftime scoreless; the Lancers had a 5-3 shot advantage and took the only corner kick of the half.
The Wildcats (8-1-1, 2-0-1 CL) earned more chances in the second half after being largely quieted before halftime.
Grace tried a pair of shots, one from Pollock and another from Rosalie Gefrorer, in the first 15 minutes.
The Lancers struggled to generate many chances down the stretch, keeping the door open for the Wildcats.
IWU made good on the final shot attempt of the match. The Wildcats struck quickly, controlling a loose ball and squeezing a shot inside the goal post with 57 seconds remaining in the match.
The Lancers will get another chance at a ranked opponent on Saturday. Grace will travel to No. 3 Marian for a 2 p.m. match. Grace will return home on Oct. 11 to take on Bethel.
