Lancers on Wrong End of Goal Scoring Frenzy

Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Last home game of the regular season for Grace College's men's soccer team proved to be its most explosive.

The game featured seven goals and four lead changes as Lancers (11-4-2, 5-3 Crossroads League) fell to Mount Vernon Nazarene 4-3 on Saturday evening.

Each goalie was called on early to make a save and in the 25th minute the game saw its first goal.

The goal, which was scored in a frenzied manner that seemed to set the tone for the chaos to follow, came from Mateus Pereira. Perreira rattled the woodwork with his first attempt and jumped on the rebound and blasted it into the back of the net to give the Lancers the 1-0 lead.

The one goal advantage was short lived for the Lancers though as six minutes later the Cougars (7-6-3, 2-5-1 CL) responded with the equalizer.

The Lancers had a near miss from Diego Yanes minutes later and another from Osmildo Estrela late in the half. At the intermission the game remained tied at one goal apiece.

The Lancers held a 7-3 advantage on shots while all other categories were nearly identical.

Grace and MVNU exchanged chances early in the half but it was the Cougars who seemed to have the momentum.

Nine minutes into the second half the Cougars netted their second goal of the game and grabbed the lead 2-1.

This time it was Grace who mustered the quick response, finding the back of the net just two minutes later. Juan Garcia took a corner kick opportunity and Estrela flashed across the box and got his head on the ball to tie the game at two.

The ebb and flow of the game seemed to be in Grace's favor as the Lancers turned up the pressure on the Cougars defense.

A set piece chance for the Lancers led to their third goal when Sebastian Lozano looped a high arcing cross into the box and once again Estrela made contact on a leaping attempt to score his second of the game to push Grace ahead 3-2.

Unfortunately for the Lancers the goal scoring was far from over.

The Cougars tied the game in just three minutes later and with 9:38 left in the game MVNU scored what proved to be the game winner. The Cougars goal came shortly after Grace had a breakaway on goal but the shot slid painstakingly wide of the goal mouth.

The Lancers  had two chances on goal in the waning seconds but were unable to find the equalizer, falling 4-3.

The Lancers now sit in fourth place in the Crossroads League standings with one game left on the schedule. Grace will clinch a top four seed and an opening round home game in the conference tournament with at least one point against Taylor on the road on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
