MARION, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team gave the Crossroads League leaders a battle on Wednesday night.
The Lancers fought fiercely with No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan before falling on the road in three sets.
Grace kept pace with IWU in digs and blocks, but the Lancers' offense produced 10 more attack errors. The Wildcats (16-3, 10-0 Crossroads League) were efficient on offense with 46 kills on a .321 percentage, while Grace had 37 kills at a .142 clip.
The Lancers claimed an early 7-4 lead in the opening set thanks to a trio of kills from Anna Elkin.
The Wildcats countered with a 10-4 run to gain a four-point cushion. The teams traded points for the rest of the set, but Grace was unable to erase the deficit and fell 25-21.
The second set saw Grace's offense struggle. The Lancers had their lowest output of the match with six kills, dropping the second set by 11.
IWU held a slight lead for much of the third set, leading by as many as four points.
Grace stayed within striking distance, however, and rallied to tie the score at 17-17. The Lancers then made a charge; a kill from Livia Tate, an ace from Liz Schmidt and a thunderous kill by Abby Leffring pushed the Lancers on top 20-18.
The Wildcats responded with four unanswered points to regain the lead, holding on for a 25-22 victory to end the match.
Levyn Snow produced 10 kills without an error (.476 percentage) to lead Grace, and Tate had 7 kills, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.
Elkin notched seven kills, Leah Henderson had five kills, Carsyn Witt passed out 17 assists with four digs, and Reese McCutchan added 15 digs.
Schmidt led all players with 16 digs, and Emma Blackford pitched in nine digs.
The Lancers will travel to Goshen on Saturday for their next match at 1 p.m. Grace returns home on Oct. 15 to take on Taylor.
