HEADED TO THE FINALS: Grace runs past CIU in NCCAA semifinals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Grace's men's soccer team unleashed a blitzkrieg against Columbia International after halftime, dominating the Rams in the NCCAA national semifinals on Friday night.

The Lancers beat CIU 4-0, scoring all four goals after halftime. Three of Grace's goals came in the first nine minutes of the second half during a goal-scoring frenzy.

The win sends Grace back to the NCCAA national championship game. The Lancers (16-6-3) will face Campbellsville in the title bout on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

Grace is chasing its second national championship in program history after claiming the 2020 crown.

Offense was hard to come by in the opening half. Grace and CIU had no offensive stats in the first 13 minutes until the Rams earned a corner kick and a shot attempt.

In the 24th minute, Grace tried its first attempt. Luis Munoz dribbled himself into space and unleashed a low drive that whizzed to the left of the goal.

The Lancers limited the Rams to one shot over the final 27 minutes of the half, while Grace's offense picked up.

Grace had a golden chance to score in the final 10 minutes off a cross from Joao Pereira, but CIU's goalkeeper deflected enough of the cross to prevent a clean shot attempt.

A few minutes later, Garcia's deep attempt missed right of the goal.

The Lancers continued to build deep into the Rams' end of the field. In the final minute, Garcia was fouled above the top of the penalty box. He took the ensuing free kick, rifling a low shot off the goalpost just before the first half expired.

The teams entered intermission scoreless. Grace had a 4-2 edge in shot attempts.

The second half was a completely different story. Before three minutes had come off the clock, Grace was in front.

Sebastian Lozano dribbled his way past four defenders on the left side of the field, making his way near the goal. He lofted a cross into a dangerous position, which resulted in an own goal as CIU redirected the ball into its own net.

Two minutes later, Grace doubled its lead. Diego Yanes's shot forced a diving save. The loose ball was picked up by Juan Garcia, who sent a sharp cross in front of the face of the goal. Lozano knocked the cross into the net with a sliding effort, pushing Grace in front 2-0.

The score shifted even more dramatically in Grace's favor four minutes later. Julian Saldivar and Munoz combined for two leading passes, placing the ball inside the box. Joao Laranjo struck the ball on the bounce to the far post, and the Lancers grabbed a stunning 3-0 lead.

Grace scored those three goals on the team's first four shots of the half.

The Rams had little to offer in response, taking a handful of shot attempts in the half, including one that hit the goalpost.

The Lancers dealt the final blow with 17 minutes remaining in the contest. Off a corner kick, Isaiah Lara crossed in front of the goal. Vasco Montez redirected the cross for the fourth and final goal.

The Lancers finished the match with a 15-9 shot advantage. Ben Kenn and Rafael Sabas combined for the semifinal shutout in goal.

Grace played Campbellsville three years in a row at NCCAA Nationals from 2019-21. Grace beat the Tigers twice in a row at the NCCAA semifinals (2019, 2020); Campbellsville won the semifinal matchup in 2021.
