UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's softball team was unable to take a game off Taylor in a doubleheader on Thursday.
The Trojans won 12-4 and 10-1 in a pair of run-shortened contests.
In the opener, the Trojans erupted early, and Grace could not recover.
Taylor scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings, including a six-run third. Half of those third-inning runs were unearned as a result of two errors in the field.
Grace managed to score a single run in the second and the fourth. Tia O'Connor led off the second with a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Bree Gardinier.
Sydney Argo used keen baserunning to score in the fourth. She led off the frame with a bunt single, then took second and third base on two wild pitches. After another pitch missed the target, Argo scampered home for Grace's second run.
The Lancers nearly evaded the run-rule with a fifth-inning rally. Bela Duran singled to score Montana Brincks, and Argo's single drove in Duran. But Grace was retired with runners on the corners.
Argo hit 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI to lead Grace's offense in game one.
In the finale, Grace's bats were quiet. The game began as a pitchers' duel with just three runs combined over the first four innings.
Grace was the first to score. Paige McCorkle singled and came around to score thanks to three consecutive singles by Daylie Rickard, Brincks and Duran.
The Lancers could have done more damage with the bases loaded and one out, but the Trojans retired the next two batters to limit the damage.
Taylor responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Trojans had four hits in the innings, scoring twice to take the lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Taylor hit a home run early to set the tone, but the next batter struck out, leaving the bases empty with two outs.
But the Trojans caught fire, ripping off seven runs with two outs to activate the run-rule and end the game.
Argo batted 2 for 3 again, and Duran had 1 hit, 1 walk and 1 RBI.
The Lancers will end the week playing at Spring Arbor on Saturday at noon. Grace's home finale is set for Monday at 3 p.m. versus St. Francis.
