Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense slowed against Wildcats

WINONA LAKE, Ind - Grace's baseball team continued league play with a home doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats took the day, winning 12-2 and 13-2.

Grace held a brief lead in the first game of the day. Carter Stogsdill worked a hit by pitch and stole a base to get into scoring position. Ryan Stark had the run-scoring single to give the home team the advantage after one.

IWU was ready to respond, tying the game in its next at bat. From there, the Wildcats scored a number of unanswered runs to take control of the game. Six runs in the third and five more down the stretch put a damper on the day.

Grace's best chance to cut into the deficit came in the fifth inning. Three consecutive batters reached after two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Unfortunately, an inning-ending double play put a halt to the rally.

The Lancers scored the final run of the game in the sixth when Jose Ayala launched one over the fence in right.

Ayala finished with 1 hit, 1 RBI and 1 run.

The backend of the doubleheader was scoreless through the first couple of innings. Grace escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second to keep the game scoreless through two.

The Wildcats, however, did most of their damage over the next three innings to move ahead on the scoreboard.

After the visitors plated five runs in the away half of the third, Grace had two runners aboard, but couldn't find the run-scoring play.

Grace's bats were held in check through the middle innings with the next opportunity to score runs coming in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lancers loaded the bases with a little help from the Wildcat defense. An error followed by a single and another error allowed one run to score. An RBI-groundout plated the second run of the inning, but that was all of the offense to be had for the day.

Josh Cosme picked up one hit and one run in the game.

The four-game series with the Wildcats will resume with another doubleheader on Friday at Tom  Roy - UPI Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
