Game Recap: Baseball |

Grace splits pair of pitching battles

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Friday's doubleheader for Grace's baseball team featured two hard-fought pitcher's duels with each team getting a win. The opener saw the Lancers come from behind to win 4-3 and the nightcap saw the Wildcats do the same to win 4-1.

Grace found itself trailing 2-0 after the first inning, but slowly chipped away at the lead to level the score a few innings later in the fourth frame.

Annikan Pettit was instrumental in both of the runs to tie the game. He hit an RBI single to plate the first run in the second inning. He later hit a grounder to third that led to an error, allowing the second run to come home.

The score remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when Grace edged ahead by a run. Maximo De Leon singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Stark followed with a single up the middle to plate the go-ahead run.

The Wildcats responded to tie the game the next half inning, but Grace quickly moved back ahead later that same inning. De Leon hit a fly ball to the outfield in the eighth that dropped in allowing the eventual winning run to touch home. This time the lead held with Grace's bullpen slamming the door shut to seal the victory 4-3.

Hunter Schumacher pitched the final inning to nail down his fourth save of the season. Parker Newby picked up the win in relief. Kyle Reinartz and Kyle Showley combined to pitch 7.1 innings with the entire group collecting four strikeouts on the day.

Stark, De Leon and Pettit each finished with two hits and 1 RBI.

The second game of the day was another close one that featured little separation for most of the contest. The game remained tied at the halfway point of the game with each team scoring a run.

Grace's run came in the third inning with De Leon earning a hit by pitch, moving into scoring position on a passed ball. Stark provided a double to chase him home.

IWU evened the score in the fourth with the go-ahead run scoring an inning later in the fifth. The Wildcats tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, giving the visitors a 4-1 advantage.

Over the final three innings, the Lancers had at least two runners reach base in each inning, but couldn't find the run-scoring play. Grace outhit IWU 8-5 in the game.

Carter Stogsdill, Sean Gannon and Stark recorded multi-games.

The Lancers will travel to Goshen on Monday to play the final game of the postponed series before heading to Huntington at the end of the week for a pair of doubleheaders.
