Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Grace ties Lindsey Wilson in thriller

COLUMBIA, Ky. - A wild nonconference game between Grace's women's soccer team and Lindsey Wilson ended fittingly in a 2-2 draw.

The match included two goals in the final three minutes as late-game drama put an exclamation point on a memorable outing.

The Lancers (6-0-1) finished the match with a 14-9 shot advantage while also earning a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Three of the goals in the match were scored off set pieces, including both of LWC's goals.

Lindsey Wilson was aggressive to start the first half, putting pressure on Grace's back line.

In the 19th minute, the Lancers committed a foul at the top of the box. The Blue Raiders fired a low shot to the left goalpost. Ivy Cline made an impressive diving save, but LWC converted the rebound to take the first lead.

The tally was Grace's first goal surrendered all season. It took the Lancers 468 minutes to be scored on.

Grace's offense flipped a switch in response to falling behind. In the 24th minute, Grace had its first chance. A cross found Nora Pollock in the middle of the penalty box, but Pollock's header bounced off the goalpost.

A few minutes later, Grace found another opportunity after a free kick. The ball traveled to the far post, but Madelief Lowik's attempt went wide. Ellie Grieser also had a header that was saved.

But ultimately Grace went into halftime facing a deficit (1-0) for the first time.

The Lancers and Blue Raiders each had four shots in the first half; Grace limited LWC to just one shot attempt over the final 26 minutes of the half.

Grace began to settle into the match and employed the team's possession attack after halftime.

The Lancers had the better of the chances, outshooting LWC 10-5 after halftime with a 7-2 corner kick edge.

The breakthrough moment came 20 minutes into the half. Heidi Klever advanced with the ball on the left edge of the field. She passed to Ellie Grieser outside the edge of the penalty box. Grieser then unleashed a dangerous shot from a long distance, beating the Blue Raiders' defense and tying the score 1-1 in the 66th minute.

Grace's offense seemed destined to score again late in the game. The Lancers had two chances a few minutes apart, using counterattack opportunities both times. Both shots by Joya Lienammer and Burns came up empty.

But Grace's pressure resulted in a corner kick in the 87th minute. Audrey Abel took the corner and bent the attempt with expert precision, beating the goalkeeper and sneaking under the crossbar for the go-ahead goal at the 87:22 mark.

Grace's jubilation was short-lived, however. Lindsey Wilson pushed forward in pursuit of an equalizer and managed to find it.

The Blue Raiders were given a free kick just a few yards outside of the penalty box. This time, LWC buried the shot attempt, tying the match at 2-2.

Lienammer tried a shot in the final 10 seconds which rolled wide of the goal frame.

Cline registered five saves in goal for Grace. Burns attempted three shots to lead all players, and Pollock, Abel, Lowik, Grieser and Lienammer each shot twice.

The Lancers will return to Kentucky on Tuesday, traveling to No. 5 Cumberlands for a 4:30 p.m. match.
