HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team stumbled on the road on Saturday at Huntington.
The Lancers had the same number of kills as HU in the match (38), but Grace's 25 attack errors played a key factor in the match result as HU won 3-0.
Despite the match score, the individual sets were largely contested fiercely.
The Foresters started the match on a quick highlight, winning the opening set by 14. HU rattled off nine unanswered points near the beginning of the set, and Grace never recovered.
The final two sets were battles until the end. In set two, HU tried to break free with a string of six unanswered points.
Grace remained in striking distance but still trailed by five 23-18. The Lancers turned to their freshmen, receiving three kills from Levyn Snow and another from Abby Leffring to race back. Grace pulled to within one until the Foresters earned a kill on the final play, squeaking out a 25-23 victory.
In the third set, Grace took a turn with an early lead. The Lancers sprinted out to a 9-4 advantage, using two kills from Snow, two blocks from Callie Jo Celichowski and an ace from Emma Blackford.
The Lancers seemed in control with an 18-11 cushion, but Huntington sliced into that gap with five straight points. Grace held a 23-20 lead before four more points in a row by HU gave the Foresters match point.
Grace survived one match point thanks to a kill from Snow, but the Foresters won the next two rallies to claim the set in extra points, 26-24.
Snow tied for match honors with 10 kills, and Olivia Martinez added eight kills and 13 digs.
Leah Henderson notched 7 kills, 4 digs and 2 block assists, Liz Schmidt produced a match-high 25 digs, and Reese McCutchan (20 assists, 15 digs) and Carsyn Witt (14 assists, 10 digs) each posted a double-double.
The Lancers are back home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to take on No. 21 Marian.
