HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team fell to the Huntington Foresters 85-64 in a hard fought battle on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers (10-12, 2-9 Crossroads League) and Foresters were neck-and-neck throughout much of the game but Hunting stretched the lead late to claim the victory.
Grace and Huntington played through the first half of the opening quarter. The Lancers had four different players score and a trifecta from
Bekah Longenbaugh had the game tied at 12.
With four minutes remaining in the first frame
Maddy Poynter hit a pull-up jump shot to give Grace a two-point edge. Both teams then went scoreless until the final minute of the quarter.
Braylin Terrell found her touch from deep with a corner 3-point shot giving Grace their biggest lead of the game at four points.
The Foresters scored the final four points of the frame to send the game into the quarter break tied at 21.
Terrell recaptured the lead for Grace at the charity stripe. She then had three blocks on the defensive side of the floor and started a fast break for Poynter pushed the lead back to four points with a shot from beyond the arc.
Huntington battled back to tie the game at 28 before Sperry and Longenbaugh knocked down 3-point field goals.
Grace entered the half tied after a last second field goal from
Morganne Houk knotted the game at 35 points.
Grace shot 32 percent from the floor in the first half while Huntington shot 38 percent. Grace forced four more turnovers and connected on three more 3-point field goals.
After breaking the ice in the second half, the Lancers led through the opening minutes.
At the midpoint of the opening quarter with the Lancers trailing 43-41,
Bekah Longenbaugh drilled a quick-fire 3-point shot to recapture the lead for Grace.
The Lancers and Foresters then traded the lead back and forth before Sperry had consecutive buckets to push Grace ahead by four.
The Foresters had a 10-0 run to end the frame and carried a 57-51 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Huntington wasted little time in increasing their lead to double digits as Grace continued to be cold from the field.
The Lancers shot just 16 percent from the field in the frame, ultimately dropping the contest 85-64.
"I thought we came out ready to play and looked really good for two and a half quarters today," commented Grace head coach
Dan Davis. "This is a game we could have been leading at the half if we knocked down our free throws and a few more layups. The misses followed us into the second half and I think we let that affect how we played as a unit down the stretch."
Grace finished the game shooting 26 percent from the field, 23 percent from deep and 52 percent from the free throw line.
Poynter led Grace with 17 points and Terrell double-doubled with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The lancer will return to action on Wednesday against Spring Arbor.
