WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team fell twice to the Spring Arbor Cougars on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers (12-34, 6-26 Crossroads League) struggled to produce offense in the afternoon scoring three runs across the double header. Grace fell 8-1 in the opener and 15-2 in the second game.
Saturday was also senior day for the Lancers. Grace honored the senior class of
Avery Sleeth,
Sydney Argo,
Paige McCorkle and
Rylei Moreno.
In the opener Spring Arbor (25-19, 17-5 CL) jumped out to an early lead. Aided by the wet and windy conditions, the Cougars scored five runs in the opening frame.
The Lancers were retired in order in the first frame then survived another Cougar threat before getting on the board in the second inning.
Sleeth had a lead off single and two productive outs for the Lancers advanced her to second base. She eventually came in to score when
Halle Nett singled to right field.
A leadoff double to start the third frame set the table for Spring Arbor to score another run, they also added a tally to their total in the fourth.
Sydney Aro and
Emme Meyering got to first and second in the fifth inning but they were left stranded.
The Cougars pushed their lead to 8-1 in the sixth inning and that proved to be the final score as the Lancers were unable to add another marker.
Chloe Huff pitched six and a third innings in relief and allowed just two earned runs.
Emma Hiss started game two in the circle for the Lancers and struck out the first batters she faced. Spring Arbor kept the inning alive and used a pair of doubles to pull ahead 1-0.
In the home half of the inning
Marly Coan matched the Cougars with a leadoff double. A sacrifice bunt from
Allie Furches and a sacrifice fly from
Molly Jones brought Coan in to score and tied the game at one. Another run was scored in the top of the second to reclaim the lead for Spring Arbor.
Grace nearly tied the game again in the bottom half of the inning as Sleeth made it all the way to third base, but she was unable to cross the final distance as the Cougars maintained their lead.
The game slid entirely in the favor of the Cougars in the third frame. Spring Arbor used seven hits to score six runs and establish a commanding 7-1 lead.
Coan got one run back for Grace with a solo home run but it did little to quell the Cougars momentum. Spring Arbor scored two in the fourth and five in the fifth to claim the 15-2 victory.
Coan went two for three from the plate and Jones was perfect from the dish. Both players had an RBI.
