Box Score 1 WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team was only able to complete one game of Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader against Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
Grace fell 9-2 in the first game before the second game was suspended because of lighting and rain in the top of the fifth frame. The Cougars were leading 11-6 at the time of suspension. A potential date to resume the rest of the second game has yet to be announced.
Game one saw plenty of offense from both teams in the early frames but the game entered the third inning still scoreless.
Both teams left two stranded in the first inning.
Marly Coan,
Daylie Rickard and
Emma Hiss loaded the bases with one out in the home half of the inning but a timely double play from the Cougars ended the threat.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning Grace again loaded the bases.
Lauren Kirkpatrick,
Allie Furches and Coan all got on board but a deep fly ball was corralled by the Cougars to strand the runners.
A pair of errors doomed the Lancers in the third inning allowing MVNU to plate four runs, three of them unearned, to jump out to the first lead of the afternoon.
Grace would again get players in scoring position with runners on first and second with one out but the Cougars' defense bowed up once more to hold the Lancers off the scoreboard. Grace left seven batters on base through the first three innings.
The fourth frame saw both teams go down in order and the Cougars added two more runs in the fifth. This time though the Lancers would answer in their own half of the inning.
Rickard got on base with a walk and promptly moved herself into scoring position with a stolen base. Hiss brought her in to score with an RBI single then scored herself on Moley Jones' double to deep center field.
MVNU tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning and the Lancers were unable to muster any more offense for themselves, falling 9-2.
The Lancers were out hit 16-7 and were led by Hiss who had two of Grace's hits.
Grace will await a potential date to resume the final three innings of the game against MVNU before concluding the season at home against Bethel on Saturday at 1 P.M.
