Grace shuts out Marygrove to remain perfect

Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. – The Lady Lancers continued their strong start to the season as Grace defeated Marygrove College 2-0 on Wednesday.

Grace was in control throughout as they held a 31-4 advantage in shots, including 15 shots on goal for the Lady Lancers.

Through their first three games in the 2012 season, the Lady Lancers (3-0) have outscored their opponents 10-1.

“Today we showed that this was our third match in five days. We had numerous chances off the woodwork and finished two well,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “This is a great time to be challenged to press through with a thoughtful performance. It will only help us in the long term. I'm proud of the women for their dedication to preach Christ today.”

Grace saw 33 minutes run off the clock before breaking onto the scoreboard. Kelsey Christner sent a corner into the penalty box, which Jocelyn Evans headed off the crossbar from 12 yards out. Evans won the rebound, juked a defender and deflected a ball off Holly Bennett and to the feet of freshman Darcy Johnston. Johnston slotted the ball home at the 33:14 mark for her first collegiate goal.

The score could have been much worse for the Mustangs (0-1) as Grace hit the crossbar multiple times in the opening period. The Lady Lancers drilled two other shots off the post in the second half, but they also produced a second goal.

In the 58th minute of play, Grace's build-up allowed Holly Bennett to earn her second assist of the match as she fed Kaitlan Wiles for the finish.

Overall in the second half, Grace outshot Marygrove 17-2.

For the game, the Lady Lancers took eight corner kicks compared to one for the Mustangs.

Mallory Rondeau, who tallied a hat trick in Grace's previous game, led all players with seven shots and three shots on goal. Evans and Bennett both took five shots, and Emily Hickerson recorded four shots off the bench.

Carmen Barnhill earned the shutout in goal for the Lady Lancers as she made four saves in 90 minutes.

Grace's next match is a must-see as the Lady Lancers welcome the Women's National Team of Haiti to Miller Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. Listen to the game live on Stretch Internet here.
