UPLAND, Ind. – Grace's women's soccer team continued its terrific start to the 2012 season with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Taylor University on Tuesday.
Freshman Carianne Sobey scored the game-winning goal early in the second overtime to give the Lady Lancers (8-1-1; 1-0 CL) the win in their Crossroads League opener.
After a strong build-up to Grace's goal-scoring play, Mallory Rondeau had possession of the ball on the left side of the field. Rondeau picked out her fellow freshman Sobey open inside the penalty box.
Sobey's position sent Taylor's goalkeeper charging toward the freshman midfielder, but Sobey alertly maneuvered to the right of the goalie and slid her shot into the net with less than nine minutes remaining in the game.
“Taylor came to play today and played a very tough match. This was a rough day for the Lancers,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “There were numerous contributing factors leading to a less than average performance from us. At the end of the day, the women were able to refocus for overtime, come up with a string of possession for the game winner, and that was our bright spot for the day.”
Grace had a handful of goal-scoring opportunities to win the match earlier, but the team was not able to convert. Erica Manchess found space for a strong look in the first overtime period but shot wide of the net.
Kaitlan Wiles and Sobey both shot on goal in the second half to no avail, and Rondeau had several shots in regulation for Grace as well.
Statistically, Grace and Taylor finished with 16 shots apiece. Rondeau paced Grace with seven shots and four shots on goal. Wiles, Manchess, Sobey and Holly Bennett each tallied two shots as well.
Carmen Barnhill earned the shutout victory in goal for Grace by making eight saves against the Trojans (7-2; 0-1 CL).
Tuesday's match contained 29 fouls, 18 of which were called on Taylor.
The Lady Lancers will continue league play with a match on Saturday at 12 p.m. versus Huntington University.
