Grace can't find the mark in loss to Huntington

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite outshooting Huntington 13-10, Grace's women's soccer team failed to score in a 1-0 defeat to Huntington University on Saturday.

In a physical Crossroads League match, a lone first-half goal from the Foresters was the only separation between the two squads.

“This was a calculated performance from Huntington today and a good win. The Grace women today had completely dominating possession and had the ball most of the match,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “They played good defense when called upon. The goal was just extremely unfortunate to take that bad a hop.”

The Foresters (8-3; 1-1 CL) took only three shots in the opening period, but they made their looks count with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute.

Grace took six shots in the first half – four of which were on goal – to go along with two corner kicks but came up empty in the opening 45 minutes of play. Jocelyn Evans missed a golden chance for Grace to score first when she missed her penalty kick attempt in the 20th minute, and Mallory Rondeau just missed on finishing two crosses from close range in the first half.

The Lady Lancers picked up their attack in the second half with seven shots after halftime, but Grace was thwarted from scoring by goalkeeper Sam Barclay's 10 saves on the day.

Carianne Sobey was the closest to scoring for Grace with her only shot attempt of the match bouncing off the crossbar.

“Where we really missed was being significantly dynamic on the ball,” Voss continued. “We only had flashes and did not play to our strengths. Moving forward will be key to our CL season.”

Saturday's match contained 30 fouls, 18 of which were called on Huntington. Each team also picked up two yellow cards.

Jocelyn Evans and Rondeau led Grace with three shot attempts. Holly Bennett and Faith Voehringer tallied two shots apiece for Grace.

The Lady Lancers will look to bounce back with a pair of home matches next week. Grace welcomes Bethel College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before hosting rival Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m. Listen to both games live here.
